SCRMC HealthBreak | Articular Cartilage Disorders and Treatment

Articular cartilage is the smooth, white tissue that covers the ends of bones where they come together to form joints. Dr. Derrick L. Burgess, at South Central Orthopaedics, explains articular cartilage, “It has no blood supply, has no nerves in it, and is very slippery. It helps decrease the friction in between the bones and the joint.” Articular cartilage injuries can happen sometimes when you have an injury to another part of your knee or from poor blood supply to the cartilage. These injuries are seen often at sporting events, and one of the main characteristics of articular cartilage injuries is having swelling that comes on and off again for a prolonged period of time. Fortunately, there are many new treatments for articular cartilage injuries offered at South Central.
